Picks and Pans Review: The Gift
CBS (9-11 p.m. ET)
Adapted from journalist-author Pete Hamill's 1973 autobiographical novel, this TV movie is a gritty antidote to holiday glop. Gary (Family) Frank, a young sailor, comes home on leave in the early 1950s to find his girlfriend has jilted him and his parents lack money for Christmas presents. Glenn Ford plays the hard-drinking father, Rosemary Harris his understanding wife. The acting is fine, and the film moodily captures Brooklyn's Irish poor.
