Though the Police cop from outside sources—ranging from the Kinks to the Beatles to reggae—they show good taste and manage to blend a distinctive mixed-beat of their own. The three-man British band is at its best when telling a story, as in the breakthrough cut Roxanne last January. Message in a Bottle, this LP's plaintive single, is the latest example. The Police are most amusing when complaining, seriously in The Bed's Too Big without You, mockingly in On Any Other Day ("My wife has burnt the scrambled eggs/The dog just bit my leg/My teenage daughter ran away/My barnyard son has turned out gay"). The boys in blue are again pleasing, if not totally arresting.
