Picks and Pans Review: The Presidential Debate

Ronald Reagan said he didn't want to split the party by debating fellow Republicans on TV. Then GOP candidates John Anderson, Howard Baker, George Bush, John Connally, Philip Crane and Robert Dole demanded prime time for their round-robin in Iowa. The Democrats, already scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET on January 7, had their problems too. Jimmy Carter wanted a sit-down affair, but the four-inch-taller Teddy Kennedy said no—and won. Jerry Brown barely started campaigning in Iowa in time to be included.
