Students who take pride in spending as little as possible on decorating may appreciate this guide, subtitled "How to Put It Together for Practically Nothing." Many of the apartments shown, however, look 10 or 20 years out of date, and one or two are downright ludicrous. (Is it necessary to show a room which is furnished with a floor mattress, low beach chair and makeshift shelves?) Many of the ideas provided by photographer Naar and writer Moore are far from new—using contact paper for wallpaper or quilts for wall hangings, for instance. But there are a few good tips, one on fashioning a table from a big wooden cable spool: Cover it with straw floor matting and then coat with polyurethane. (St. Martin's Press, $12.95)
