Picks and Pans Review: The Chisholms

CBS (8-10 p.m. ET)

A series based on Evan Hunter's book about a family traveling West by covered wagon in the 1840s reopens in a special two-hour segment. The close-knit Chisholms hit the trail where last year's well-acted miniseries left them: in Fort Laramie, Wyo. Robert Preston and Rosemary Harris are again outstanding as the parents of a brood that includes Ben Murphy and Jimmy Van Patten. Helped by excellent direction and a believable script, they manage to create a vivid, moving saga.
