Natalie Cole and Peabo Bryson
The recent upsurge in merging solo stars (e.g., Summer and Barbra Streisand, Streisand and Neil Diamond, Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams) has been a bonanza. This team of two disco-soul-blues mainstays, Natalie Cole and Peabo Bryson, is no exception. Cole's grittiness and Bryson's ease offset well. The material is intelligently mixed, too, leaning more on the ballad side and interspersed with some tunes written by both artists. Cole's danceable Gimme Some Time is a winner, but the most delightful surprise is Your Lonely Heart, with Cole yodeling in the background.
