Picks and Pans Review: Stay as You Are
When (and if) Roman Polanski's Tess opens in the U.S., it could make Natassia Kinski, the director's 18-year-old, German-born protégé, a star. In this, her film debut, Kinski is powerfully seductive and—from the scant evidence provided—a natural actress too. The trouble is that there's hardly any plot and no real dialogue between Natassia and co-star Marcello Mastroianni, 55. So what if Kinski may be his daughter from a long-ago affair. The possibility is raised, then forgotten in time for a barrage of unabashed lovemaking. Poor Marcello is exhausted; not so Kinski, who takes off her clothes early and does, indeed, stay as she is most of the way. (In Italian with English subtitles) (Not rated)
