Picks and Pans Review: Steal the Night

Cindy Bullens

A former backup singer for Elton John, Rod Stewart and Bob Dylan, Bullens is 25. So don't take too literally the line "I'm a full tilt rocker and I'm just sixteen"—which is a doubtful proposition anyway. Also don't be put off by the ludicrous attempt of her label (Casablanca) to hype Cindy as a female Mick Jagger right down to the pout. The album itself, though, is often invigorating, as in Real to Real or Two-Track Mind. The Boston-born Bullens wrote all but one of the 10 tunes herself, co-produced the LP and plays guitar and piano, too. If a mixed bag, it at least has enough urgency to keep her solo career rolling.
