Picks and Pans Review: Ah, Men!
by Burt Avedon
"Ah, men! Once so proud, bold and secure. Now we seem like the great herds of buffalo that roamed the plains—an endangered species." Does anyone believe that? This anti-feminist book by a wine company executive consists mainly of interviews with Art Buchwald, James Dickey, Helen Gurley Brown, Gael Greene, Joseph Heller, Elizabeth Janeway, Gore Vidal and Bruce Jenner. They're all selectively used by Avedon to justify chapter headings such as "Learning to Be a Man," "Wham, Bam, Thank You, Ma'am!" "Out of the Closets" and "Toward the New Male." The author concludes that the women's movement is making life impossible for men, and he yearns for that long-ago "time when all persons, men and women, knew their place." Ugh. (A&W, $10.95)
