Picks and Pans Review: The Last Married Couple in America

"Endangered species," reads the lettering on the sweat shirt built for two that George Segal and Natalie Wood wear in this movie's ad campaign. The sweat shirt is referring to the beleaguered institution already dealt with tearfully (Kramer vs. Kramer) and humorously {Starting Over) in recent months. The premise is simple: All of Segal and Wood's "happily married" friends get divorced. Predictably, they separate too. What little spark the film has is generated by its lead players, convincing in their mid-marriage crisis. Dom DeLuise gets some laughs as a plumber turned porno actor, as does Valerie Harper as a liberated divorcée. Not much can be said for director Gilbert Cates, except perhaps that he's improving; his last—The Promise—showed even less. (R)
