Picks and Pans Review: A Simple Story

Romy Schneider won the French version of the Oscar for her performance, but that doesn't mean the movie is good. Schneider, still one of the sexiest actresses in films, plays a 39-year-old who's breaking up with her lover. To complicate things, her closest friend's husband has become suicidal, adding more gloom to their small circle. After much soul-searching, Schneider looks up her ex, and in what seems like a reconciliation, they spend a few nights in the sack. The pace is agonizingly slow, however, and though the story seems like real life, it doesn't seem like entertainment. At least there are the delightful touches present in many French movies—wonderful cinematography, lots of kids and dogs and scrumptious eating scenes. And there is, of course, Romy Schneider.
