Picks and Pans Review: Foreign Matter

by Christopher Byron

In this crisp first novel, the hero, who works for a magazine called Globe, botches up a story in Africa and escapes on vacation in Greece. He happens to select a remote island where a German with a yacht unloads boxes at night, the Turks send over planes, a beautiful American girl studies botany on the beach and there are reports of a big oil find. The author of this adventure is a TIME associate editor who served as a correspondent in Greece. He soaked up some mythology along with an insider's view of unreasonable New York editors and a reporter's ways with facts and expense accounts. Greece, as a land of crazed little dramas and devious plots, comes alive nicely. (Doubleday, $10)
