The bizarre but fascinating Dunham danced and choreographed on Broadway (Cabin in the Sky) and in Hollywood (Stormy Weather) before she left the U.S. in 1947, partly as a statement of black consciousness. She returned at intervals and formed a company for slum kids in St. Louis in 1969, but she's now a full-scale voodoo priestess, and this special, taped in Haiti and Nashville, is a strange mixture of American modem dance and Afro-Caribbean forms.
