The author's The Complete Book of Running, huge success though it was, turned out to be not quite as complete as he—or we—had thought. As a matter of fact, the very success of that book (more than one million sales) inspired a lot of the material that makes up this companion volume. Among the subjects Fixx follows up are strategies for overcoming inertia, running shrewder races, how to keep going past 40, what to read about running and a lot more. The most interesting chapter is about a man named Ralph S. Paffenbarger Jr., a Stanford University epidemiologist who believes he has proved that running promotes health and long life. Fixx is inspirational himself and marvelously easy to read. (Random House, $10)
