Picks and Pans Review: Spy

by Norman Garbo

This novel is about dirty double-dealers in the U.S. "Service," a cross between the CIA and FBI that is out to eliminate the hero. Why? Because he knows that a top State Department official with a chance at the Presidency is a ruthless law-and-order fanatic who is prepared to kill any number of people to win the office. To avoid being assassinated, the good guy has his face completely redone by plastic surgery; of course, the four people who were in the hospital with him and know what he looks like become pawns of the Service. Garbo, a painter-novelist, has produced a book entertaining only to those who like their corpses plentiful and their patriotic sermons fuzzy. (Norton, $10.95)
