Picks and Pans Review: Washington, D.c.
A still little-known branch of the Smithsonian, the Museum of African Art has its gallery in black abolitionist Frederick Douglass' historic home. Its collection of 8,500 items focuses on tribal art and demonstrates the influence of African traditions on modern Western art (Modigliani and Picasso, for instance). Eliot Elisofon's photo archives of African life are also featured.
