Picks and Pans Review: With My Song...

Debby Boone

Since her secular singing is not exactly characterized by raw passion, it isn't surprising that Boone takes a detached, tentative approach to her sacred music, too. These are all new religious songs, including Bob Dylan's What Can I Do for You? (also on his latest LP, Saved), and many of them have a mildly rockish beat. Those looking for gospel should go elsewhere. Yet Debby does have a kind of crystalline sincerity that may win a few converts, at least among those who can get over the presumption of Marty Goetz, a composer-keyboard player, who has tried to write music to the incomparable poetry of the 23rd Psalm.
