Commodores
The six-man group is, of course, well noted for its funky, driving rhythms epitomized in its monster hit of 1977, Brick House. This album continues true to form with cuts like All the Way Down and Got to Be Together. But their diversity is also revealed on such variant tunes as Old-Fashion Love, a lively, danceable love song, and the title cut, which appears almost rooted to the folk music of the '60s. The spiritual Jesus Is Love captures the frenetic atmosphere of a steamy Baptist church on a summer Sunday, thanks to the group's tight harmony and a fervent 29-voice background choir. The adoration the Commodores have gained since their 1974 launch is well earned.
