Picks and Pans Review: Television from Japan

Even cable TV doesn't yet feature NHK (the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation), so public TV has imported two documentaries and three dramas, all subtitled, about contemporary life in Japan. The first of the weekly shows, Pilgrimage of a Thousand Days, documents a monk's arduous journey to a sacred Buddhist temple near Kyoto.
