Picks and Pans Review: A Walk in Wolf Wood

by Mary Stewart

The publisher asks coyly, "Is it a children's story?" The answer is yes, and Stewart's fans who expect another of her best-selling mysteries or her historical novels about Merlin will be disappointed in this new work. It's about John and Margaret, a young brother and sister who befriend an enchanted wolf in a forest, call themselves Hans and Gretta and go back in time to a castle. There are some nice descriptive passages about manners and meals in 14th-century Germany, but the fairy-tale ending seems perfunctory, as if Stewart realized the project wasn't worth any more of her time. A Walk in Wolf Wood will entertain only 8-year-olds. (Morrow, $8.95)
