Picks and Pans Review: Bible Stories for Children

retold by Geoffrey Horn and Arthur Cavanaugh

Bible stories can be heavy going for fidgety kids—but this new retelling manages to provide enough drama and action to interest the 6-to-10-year-olds it's aimed at. With a large, easy-to-read typeface and vivid illustrations, the stories have been thoughtfully translated into modern American English that will please children and parents. From the Creation to the Resurrection (here titled "Jesus Comes Back"), the most important stories and parables from the Old and New Testaments are retold in chapters short enough to be read in one sitting. This version of course sacrifices most of the Bible's lovely language. But young listeners should comprehend its basic philosophy and look forward to reading the unabridged text when they're old enough. (Macmillan, $12.95)
