Some of the text of this book appeared in LIFE and Esquire magazines a year ago, and Wolfe's satirical drawings are a regular feature of Harper's. No matter. This journalistic hit man with a Yale Ph.D. in American studies is a delight to reread. Among other subjects the King of Sting takes on are sexual mores, independent women, the invisible wife, the modern churchman and TV anchormen. Wolfe also points out that the real lesson of Watergate was how stable our government is: Richard Nixon was nearly impeached, he says, and "nothing happened." In his sketches, Wolfe reveals his true savagery: Ted Kennedy, for example, shows up as a grotesquely obese man in a bathing suit. (Farrar, Straus, Giroux, $12.95)
