One of the most rewarding autobiographies by a writer in the English language is Greene's A Sort of Life, which appeared first in 1971 and is still in print. This new book, which is also billed as an autobiography, is a bit of a cheat. Some of it is made up of articles and book introductions previously published, and the result is uneven. Still, it is Graham Greene, writing his clear, clean prose and even making deprecating remarks about his early poems and novels, which in retrospect he finds imitative and bad. At the very least, Ways of Escape should be a source of great comfort and instruction to any young writer who is suffering the frustrations of rejection and the vagaries of the publishing business.
