This fine, old-fashioned British novel is set in the contemporary world, but rooted firmly in Victorian traditions. The heroine is a good woman, a widow with two daughters who has always been the sort who took in strays. As middle age approaches she meets and marries a handsome, much younger actor who does TV commercials. On their honey moon she discovers that he is evil. Genteel, tidy society is no match for those who live in depravity and corruption. P.D. James wrote about the melodrama that takes place when such worlds collide in her latest novel, Innocent Blood.
