Picks and Pans Review: Tchaikovsky Concerto for Violin & Orchestra in D Major, Op. 35
Erick Friedman, violin
Recording the Tchaikovsky concerto is to violinists what killing a lion used to be to some African warriors—a rite of passage. It took the New Jersey-born Friedman, 41, a while, but he emerges all but unscathed. His articulation and the passion of his first movement cadenza might not quite equal the kind of definitive rendering of Friedman's former teacher, Jascha Heifetz. Yet, backed by Bulgaria's Sofia State Philharmonic, he plays with appealing warmth and intensity.
