In a rather odd match, The Elephant Man takes on Raging Bull (each has eight Oscar nominations). Other runoffs include Mary Tyler (Ordinary People) Moore and Sissy (Coal Miner's Daughter) Spacek for Best Actress and Robert (The Great Santini) Duvall, Robert (Bull) DeNiro and John (Elephant) Hurt for Best Actor. But the real question is whether host Johnny Carson will again turn the event into an unofficial Fred Silverman roast, or will President Reagan's taped remarks (an Oscar first) upstage everybody?
