800-824-7888 (except California): Established in 1976, this registration service has helped more than 1,000 owners track down wandering animals. Among other rescues: A retired 15-year-old champion Tennessee walking horse, Royal Perfection, was located at 4 a.m. after being spooked by a mountain lion. For a one-time fee of $19.50, an owner may list his pet with its medical and identifying information and receive a blue ID tag imprinted with the Switchboard's number. A must for pets with wanderlust.
