Picks and Pans Review: Colorado Rockies

A test of any cyclist's stamina, this rugged trip is recommended for experienced tourers only. (Bus service is available for those with less wind and ambition.) The gem in this cluster of more than a dozen mountain hostels is at Estes Park, on a onetime dude ranch at the eastern gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. The panorama from here is magnificent. Some bikers might require oxygen on the 50-mile trek from Estes Park to the hostel at Grand Lake by Trail Ridge Road, which winds along the crests at up to 12,183 feet.
