The beaches and sand dunes of Lake Michigan's eastern shore are never far from this 300-mile Coloma-to-Charlevoix bike route. Hostels are every 50 to 55 miles and most are in private homes. Space is limited; reservations are recommended. A word of caution: People who open their homes to hostelers have the right to refuse those who aren't self-propelled. Dune buggy riders may have to sleep on the beach.
