Picks and Pans Review: Cheech & Chong's Nice Dreams

Cheech Marin and Thomas Chong's Up in Smoke and Cheech and Chong's Next Movie grossed more than $160 million, not a small stash for a dopey comedy team. This follow-up is more of the same—predictable jokes about smoking dope, ribald sex (featuring gorgeous Evelyn Guerrero) and general zaniness. Cheech and Chong are selling marijuana by hiding it in ice-cream sticks, and their erratic drive through L.A. is hilarious. Stacy Keach, who deftly plays a drug-crazed police sergeant, seems to turn into a giant lizard from smoking too much of the boys' weed. He ends up flicking his tongue at everything. Dr. Timothy Leary, the 1960s guru of mind-bending drugs, appears as himself. C&C fanatics won't care that the movie lasts only 87 minutes—after all, time always seems to fly when you're enjoying yourself, whether from a shallow movie or a deep drag. (R)
