The network's attempt to duplicate Goldie Hawn's Private Benjamin can't keep step with the quirky original. A weak plot—Hooper, played by Wendy Holcombe, enlists in the Army because she believes it will aid a showbiz career—is further undermined by humor as subtle as a good rap with a rifle butt. CBS's spin-off of Private Benjamin in the fall should outrank this busted pilot.
