Picks and Pans Review: Take This Job and Shove It

Inspired by Johnny Paycheck's 1977 hit, this film stars Robert Hays (come down since Airplane!) as a business school smoothie sent to drastically increase production at a small Iowa brewery. He incurs the workers' wrath until his sense of frustration equals theirs; eventually they conspire against their mutual employer. Eddie Albert, Art Carney, Penelope Milford, Martin Mull and Barbara Hershey all turn up, but the film doesn't call for much acting. It's unpretentious fun, and if the audience groans at its orneriness at times, it will mostly be cheering the brewery workers on. Performances by such country stars as Charlie Rich help, too. (PG)
