50 Berkeley Square, London
Established by Uriah Maggs in 1853, this is Britain's most prestigious rare book emporium. It is located in a stately 18th-century Georgian house. Inside, on highly polished mahogany cabinets, are several million dollars worth of books on virtually every subject. Although Maggs does admit to being a little light on scientific and medical textbooks, it does try to accommodate its clients—currently it is supplying an English psychiatrist with tomes on lunacy and madhouses.
