Nebenzahl's collection is wide-ranging, including astronomy and navigation books, atlases, Americana and arcane literature. However, perhaps Nebenzahl is best known for the 1969 purchase of John J. Audubon's 19th-century, four-foot-tall collection of 451 hand-colored plates, Birds of America. The book, bought for a wealthy Mid-westerner, cost $216,000. It was later donated to Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History.
