7649 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, Md.

Allen and Patricia Ahearn began Quill and Brush in 1976. As the name suggests, the store shares quarters with a gallery for local artists. Among the shop's more intriguing sales was a collection of eight first-edition F. Scott Fitzgerald books, inscribed to prominent people (e.g., Malcolm Cowley). The lot was sold for $12,000 to an anonymous buyer in 1977.
