Picks and Pans Review: A Photo Journal

Ruth Orkin

A Hollywood brat (her mom was a silent film actress), Orkin biked across the country as a teenager, joined the WAACs in World War II and later worked for Look and LIFE. She always took a camera along. The result is a lot of family snapshots, some memorable celebrity pictures (Marlon Brando as a brooding Brutus, a prestardom Woody Allen), some magazine essays and several color views of Central Park from A World Through My Window, her best work. (Viking, $35)
