Eliot Porter; text by Wallace and Page Stegner
Like Ansel Adams, Porter focuses on nature; his work is familiar from old Sierra Club posters. Here, Porter teams with Pulitzer Prize novelist Wallace Stegner and his son, Page, an English professor. Porter's 89 photographs are stately, delicate and bright, whether of Maine's rocky shore or North Carolina poplars. The images are burdened, however, by the Stegners' often precious historical-ecological travelogue. (E.P Dutton, $29.50)
