The Japanese man who took these pictures, unearthed by the Okanogan, Wash. Historical Society, arrived in the American Northwest in 1903 and remained a mystery. Seemingly well educated and immaculately dressed, he took a job as a cook's helper and began shooting pictures on the side. When he died a decade later at 39, Frank Matsura had become a photographer laureate for the frontier towns of Oregon and Washington.
