by James Herndon

This memoir is about sailing with the merchant marine in 1945 just as the war was ending. Herndon calls the narrator "One-Eye" or "the Explorer." His stories of a young man at sea are often funny, rich and pleasurable. There is a tender innocence about the shore visits to cathouses and bars, the drunken fights, the hard-earned money squandered. The writing is original and full of touching moments. Herndon, the author of three other books, is now a junior high English teacher in California. (Simon and Schuster, $12.95)
