As creators of wondrous sounds, the British synthesizer duo of Paul Humphreys and Andrew McCluskey (augmented here by three extra hands) could give the German techno-rockers Kraftwerk a run for their microchips. But, as OMD demonstrated last year with their dance club hit Enola Gay, they like to send their esoterica marching to a disco beat, which can get awfully boring after a while. Yet when OMD drop the thump-thump beat and deploy all their considerable aural resources—as they do in the middle of the title cut—you begin to see how much more successful this album could have been.
