In 1929 sociologists Robert and Helen Lynd published their ground-breaking study of a typical American town, Muncie, Ind., which they code-named Middletown. Fifty years later filmmaker Peter Davis (story, page 59), an Academy Award winner for the 1975 Vietnam documentary Hearts and Minds, returned to Muncie to see how things had changed. The themes in this six-part series are myriad, including sports, religion, marriage and politics. The filmmaking is magic.
