Picks and Pans Review: The Gentle Eye

UPDATED 06/14/1982 at 01:00 AM EDT Originally published 06/14/1982 at 01:00 AM EDT

by Jane Bown

Bown, who works for the London newspaper Observer, doesn't have Benson's killer instinct for pictures that betray their subjects' weaknesses. Her beautifully composed portraits, though, are flattering and provocative. This book represents a span of 30 years and runs from Mick Jagger and Liza Minnelli to Samuel Beckett and Albert Schweitzer, plus some anonymous Britons and a few still lifes. (Thames and Hudson, $10.95)
