Picks and Pans Review: The Pinups

The Pinups

If some girl singing groups seem to have just slipped out of a malt shop booth, this buxom foursome sounds as if its members just slipped into something more comfortable. Lisa London, Glynnis Talken, Mary Senecal and Tegan are singing pros aged 22 to 32; they know what to do and which way to face while they're doing it. They all sing passably, but as players they are great lookers. The Pinup approach reeks of the original Girl Group Era in the '60s, when Svengalis would bring some chicks into a studio to chirp out vocal tracks. It worked for groups like the Crystals and the Shangri-Las, but the Pinup music is so calculated it's not much fun. You can imagine the ladies looking at their watches while they rock and roll us.
