Jennifer Warnes
When Warnes' single "Could It Be Love" became a hit early this year, it seemed logical that an LP would follow. But none was forthcoming, reportedly because Warnes and Clive Davis, president of her label, Arista, had a clash over what direction her career should take. (She hasn't cut a whole new album since 1980.) This release seems to be a compromise, including 10 titles, two recorded this year and others from as far back as 1976. Warnes is a strong pop singer—an Anne Murray without Murray's furry warmth but with more zip to her voice—and has recorded such likable songs as "Right Time of the Night" and "I Know a Heartache When I See One". If it does nothing else, this LP does suggest that maybe Davis ought to let Warnes have her own way more often.
