Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep are passionately convincing as a New York advertising executive and his estranged wife locked into a bitter custody dispute over their son (played with admirable restraint by cherubic 7-year-old Justin Henry). Directed and written by Robert Benton, 1980's Best Picture Oscar winner is no turgid soap opera, but a crisply constructed series of vignettes which moves without lapsing into sentimentality. Only a wildly improbable resolution upsets an otherwise finely balanced film.
