CBS (8-11 p.m. ET)

This eight-hour miniseries set during the Civil War is TV's Gone With the Wind—an ambitious undertaking with a script by Ian Hunter based on material by historian Bruce Catton. Among the huge cast (175 speaking roles, 4,500 extras), standouts are Gregory Peck's Lincoln, Rip Torn's Grant and John Hammond's young artist-reporter. Director Andrew McLaglen handles the battle scenes superbly. (Installments are scheduled to follow on Tuesday and Wednesday.)
