And then there's Witte, an illustrator who proved in his The Book of Terns to have a chronic case of the puns. He takes on Santa in this volume, wherein we find Saint Nick asking directions ("Lost Claus," of course), fleeing his wife ("Escape Claus") and otherwise being subjected to verbal indignity. Is it all too much? Not really, but it is a Claus call. (Holt, Rinehart and Winston, $4.95)
