This gripping melodrama about a near meltdown at a California nuclear reactor is sparked by fine performances from Jack Lemmon as the plant's conscience-stricken chief engineer and Jane Fonda as an ambitious investigative reporter. The doomsday scenario proved frighteningly prophetic: The film's March 1979 release coincided with the real-life nuclear accident at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island reactor.
