An infectiously childlike sense of wonder pervades director Steven (E.T.) Spielberg's genial sci-fi fantasy, featuring Richard Dreyfuss, Melinda Dillon and 4-year-old Cary Guffey as Mid-westerners whose mundane lives are altered by the arrival of a swarm of benign extraterrestrials. The actors are uniformly fine, but the real stars are the dazzling special effects, developed by Douglas Trumbull and his team, which helped propel the box office receipts of this 1977 film into hyperspace.
