Lawrence's autobiographical 1913 novel about a working-class family in northern England's coal-mining country has been turned into a wanly depressing seven-part Masterpiece Theatre series, despite solid-as-bedrock performances by Eileen Atkins as the obsessive mother and Karl Johnson as the artistic middle son (modeled on Lawrence).
